More ways to get involved

You can also support us in a number of other ways.

Fundraising

Organise a fundraising event to support our work. This could be a bridge session, a school activity, or something completely different.

We can provide materials and support to help make your event a success.

Bridge clubs can also support us by donating table money from a special session or running a charity event.

Learn to play

There's no better way to help our game to grow than by getting involved yourself.

Become a Trustee

Our excellent team of Trustees guide the charity and bring expertise across education, finance and governance. We are always keen to hear from people who would be interested in becoming a Trustee of EBED.

If you are keen to contribute at this level, please e-mail Richard Croot and we can share more information about the role and commitments involved.

How your support helps

Your support helps EBED introduce more people to bridge, create opportunities for young players and strengthen teaching and directing across the game.

English Bridge Education & Development is the national charity for bridge education and development in England.

Our charitable purposes are to promote duplicate bridge for the public benefit and to advance the education of young people in full-time education through the playing of duplicate bridge.

We support the learning, teaching, promotion and development of bridge in schools, universities, clubs, counties and community organisations.

Learn bridge

EBED helps new and improving players find clear routes into the game. We provide access to learning resources, books, online options and guidance for those who want to take their next steps in bridge.

Youth bridge

EBED has a particular charitable focus on young people in education. We support youth bridge through schools, universities, competitions, residential camps, online play, junior awards, grants and bursaries.

We also support the teachers, parents, volunteers, clubs and local organisers who help young people discover and continue playing bridge.

Teach bridge

Through EBTA, the national network for bridge teaching, EBED supports bridge teachers and teaching assistants with teaching resources, professional support, shared practice and other benefits.

We aim to help teachers introduce bridge confidently and effectively in clubs, schools, community settings and online.

Directing

EBED provides training and support for club and tournament directors, helping bridge sessions and competitions to be run fairly, confidently and well.

Wider support and development

EBED produces and shares educational materials, supports clubs and partner organisations, promotes the wider benefits of bridge, and connects learners, teachers, young players and volunteers with suitable opportunities.

We also maintain an interest in research and evidence about the benefits of bridge, including previous work connected with the University of Stirling. We use this wider understanding to support the case for bridge as an educational and social activity.

As a small charity, EBED cannot provide every service directly or respond to every local need immediately. Where we cannot help directly, we aim to signpost people to appropriate resources, organisations or next steps.

Volunteer with EBED

Bridge thrives because people give their time, skills and enthusiasm to help others learn and enjoy the game.

There are many ways to get involved — from helping at youth events and supporting beginners to assisting with administration, communications, photography, social media or small projects behind the scenes.

You do not need to be an expert bridge player to help. Some roles involve working directly with young people, while others support the charity behind the scenes.

We also welcome students and young volunteers who would like experience contributing to a national charity or community project.

Some youth-facing roles may require a DBS check.

Join an advisory group

EBED benefits from the experience and insight of people across bridge, education and youth activity.

Our advisory groups help shape ideas, provide practical feedback and support the development of projects and initiatives. Members may contribute educational experience, youth perspectives, operational expertise or specialist knowledge from outside bridge.

Some people contribute regularly, while others assist with occasional discussions or individual projects.

If you are interested in supporting EBED in this way, we would be pleased to hear from you.

Leave a legacy

A gift in your will can help future generations discover bridge, develop confidence and enjoy the social and educational benefits of the game.

Legacies of every size help EBED continue its work supporting young players, teachers, schools, clubs and volunteers across the bridge community.

If you are considering leaving a gift to EBED, we would be happy to speak confidentially and provide any information you may need. If you have already made a decision, template forms and further advice can be found here.

EBED’s registered charity number is 1153543.
